Celebrate the Birth of a New City |
|
| Article by Mieke Tankink | Aug 28 2008 |
The Inaugural celebration then moves to the Menifee Lakes Country Club, a private club situated on a 27 hole golf course in the middle of the Menifee Lakes community, east of I-215. The Theme Slogan voted on by the inauguration celebration committee last meeting is: "Celebrating our History, Creating our Future". I think it's appropriate, because I believe it truly captures the spirit behind the birth of our new City.
When Menifee becomes an official city on Oct 1, 2008, we will become not only the 480th city in California, but one of the larger cities, just shy of the top 100, with a population estimated at over 68,000. There is a broader significance to that status as many state and regional committees that our city officials will participate in will be based on our size and significance in the state.
This is an exciting time for Menifee, a historical time. We can expect more labor pains as our city council settles in to their new role; as residents become familiar with a new level of government; as the community learns how to particpate in the processes that govern them. As much as there are five individual members, elected by very narrow margins, they do seem to think and act as a separate entity. Will the whole be greater than the sum of it's parts? I'm optimistic that the answer will be an overwhelming YES!
The largest Ad-hoc committee to date has been the inauguration celebration committee. More than 40 volunteers have been meeting for over a month to plan the events for the first official City Council meeting as well as a community celebration worthy of the new birth. Being a community steeped in history both in the rural areas, but the history of Sun City core, Menifee Lakes, J-Bar and the newer tract developments, make us a rich and diverse community. I'm convinced that this marriage of lifestyles can only produce the best in city services and programs.
